Tick Tock - Distressed Clock

Hi all, how is your Sunday?  I have done all my Sunday jobs already so I can have a crafty afternoon :-). But first I thought I better upload my DT piece for That Craft Place Challenge Blog, this fortnight we want to see Monochrome.  I have been trying to use different techniques I want to learn, and also to use stash that has never seen the light of day lol.  When I see others using the distress ink pad browns I look on with envy as I scare away from browns especially in this range as they are so many.  Since doing my chart, I can now see quite clearly what browns would go together, so I decided this challenge will be the use of those browns, at the end of the day, I could always through it away I thought lol.  I really love what I have done and I really want to share how I make things so this is rather photo heavy showing how I got to the end result.
I would like to enter my piece into the following challenges -
Fashionable Stamping Challenge - script/book/text
Simon's Wednesday Challenge - anything goes
C.R.A.F.T Challenge Blog - monochromatic.
Right I shall start, the finished item is first, so you don't have to pile through loads of pictures.  They are further close up pictures later plus a list of what I used :-)

Finished clock,
I haven't put the plastic front on as
you can't really take a picture very well, and
also I can't decide if to pop it on or not lol.
I think the only mega mistake is I couldn't quite get the circle to sit
in the middle, but if you look at the original that doesn't either.
But for me I can mega notice it.  I used treasure gold to try and
make it blend away (I wish lol).

This is how it started!!!  £1 Ikea clock,
I bought it a few years ago as I had
seen an article on using alcohol inks to
cover it.  I have got another one so
I might try that, mind you I think I would
like to try a shabby chic vintage version of the above.

I separated all the pieces to see what I had lol
(think I managed to get it back together alright, I didn't
any pieces left over lol)

Next a coat of gesso for the sides.

Then some Fresco paint in little black dress, I also
painted the hands as I wanted a matt look.

The back had the same treatment, gesso to start
but for the back I used normal black acrylic paint
as I didn't mind the gloss look at the back :-)

Next I used my finger to add vasaline
in places, then painted it with
Fresco brown shed, I gave it a nice
thick coat.  When it had completely dry
I used a scrap of cloth to give it a good rub.

As you can see, lots of paint released where the vasaline was.
My hands are feeling quite soft today!!!!

Next I added some more vasaline, I initially was going
to use a brush as I thought it would give me cleaner lines,
but that last seconds, what a parlarver, forget that,
my little finger came out to play lol. Mind you that was a pain
so I gave up with thin lines.  I went over both areas, black and brown.

Now the next step was to add the paint, I used Distress Paint antiqued bronze.
As you know distress paint, is runny so it can respond to water,
well you should have seen the state of me, I'm squeezing the life
out of the bottle, no paint seemed to be coming out, errrrrr yes
it was, because I had put the bottle upside down for awhile instead
of shaking, all the mica blocked it slightly and it was coming out
under the lid, well it was everywhere, and seems I didn't want to waste
anything, I am mopping it off my top with a paint brush, off the chair, off
the table lol.  So I didn't take a picture as I was dripping lol and
my camera has enough colours on it already!!!
So when the second paint has dry, again you scrub for all your might :-).
Now sometimes you tend to get chips the show the plastic underneath,
no problems I covered them later with treasure gold.
So this is almost done, further down I shall show you what I did next to
grunge it up a bit.

A closer picture

Another closer pic :-)

Next came the background.  I truly didn't know where I was going with this at
the start.  In the pictures it looks like I'm knowing what I was
doing but you will see further down that this was by 3rd try!!!!

I used Distress ink pads, rusty hinge, then I layered tea dye in the
areas that were not covered also over the areas that the
rusty hinge was.  Now seems the challenge was monochrome
I guess I shouldn't be using orange, but I wanted that type of
brown in areas, the orange/brown.  So all the rusty hinge
does get covered up but with different browns which
make a nice orangey brown (well errr that's my theory lol)

Next vintage photo, the top half is done in this picture,
I layed it heavy in areas and not so heavy in the other areas.

Last but not least my favourite distress colour - gathered twigs :-)
Again heavy in areas, not so much in others.  I loved the outcome :-)

I knew I wanted to use Tim Holtz time travellers stamps.  I made
a mask of each image I wanted to use.  Now you can see here I made
another mask but only a rough one.  This is because I wanted to flick water
over the distress colours, but I wanted to area where he was not to.

As you can see, I added the extra mask then
went flicking water.  The reason I didn't use the mask that was
properly cut is that the water was going to make
it all wrinkly and it was best to throw this away after one use.

Next I used a Crafters Workshop mini gears mask with gathered twigs ink pad.
Again I used the mask, but the proper one this time as the other one
had gone to see the great big green bag (recycling lol)

As you can see, I have a space in the middle.
Now you can have a laugh, I took the mask off, then went for a cuppa.
When I came up, I picked this up to show my other half how
well I was doing.  Well that was
it, I couldn't work out which was it went, I
spent ages turning upside down, sideways to see which way :-)

Next came the stamping, I masked only two kinds of stamps, the man and
the gears, well roughly.  This is because I wanted to use them
in a different way, so I didn't want archival text going over them :-)

Oh yes, I remember now, I actually did this part first before
the next lot of stamping, now initially on my last
one I didn't.  I'm waffling lol.
So I wanted to lift water off to give a bleached blotchy effect
of old.  I found this while playing with my sea canvas on
a previous post, I loved how the woman had a blotchy look.
Well I wanted the same look but just a different way of doing it.
Initially before I did this I was contemplating colouring him but
then remembered the canvas I did and went for this instead.
I think it makes a nice contrast to the background.
(ooooo I'm sounding like I know what I'm doing lol NOT lol)

Now I masked and used the scrip stamp from Tim Holtz french market place.
I used archival coffee and didn't use a block.
Then I sort of got carried away with stamping and didn't take another picture
of the process (I guess we all need our secrets lol) but seriously I forgot lol.
I used Paperartsy stamps clocks 5 and 6.  The Time phrase stamped
in black archival and the mini gears from the stamp
set with both colours.

And here are the first ones I did.  The right one was only a rough
on photocopy paper, not so much for the colour but for the stamping.
The one on the left was a slightly smaller version, you can see black card
underneath, I thought it would look better this way, nope it looked awful
hence having to do another one.  Now really if I had thought I should have
tried the black card underneath the copy paper one first lol.

Next are lots and lots of close ups.

I added script to the sides and treasure gold.
I still felt it was a little bright so I got my archival black ink pad
and swiped in areas, swipe, wipe, swipe, wipe, swipe, wipe etc :-)

Now your probably thinking why have
you got photos of your craft room, it's not Wednesday lol.
Well I had to show you what the room is like when I'm actually
right in the middle of crafting.

I know everything gets put anywhere as I'm working.
Most stuff end up on the floor :-)

Yep I'm actually crafting in this small area lol

This is my view lol.

And normally I start this way.  Now I took this photo about an hour ago,
while I have been waiting for all the pictures to upload here I have
already messed it up lol.  Yep I have my camera on there
as well as I have been asked to do a crackle tutorial.
Better watch out, another load of pictures to plough through lol.

Hope you all have a fantastic rest of the day, I'm off now to cook Sunday dinner.  It's cooler today so no more salad, a proper meat, potatoes and veg dinner yummy lol.
Thank you all for your wonderful comments, I'm trying to get around to you all, it's taking sometime as if I'm not crafting I am sketching (not properly, stick men for me lol, just ideas of more creations), or I'm crocheting lol, so I will get to you in the end :-) Hugs Kezzy xxxxx
